The Gesar Sherab School will offer
primary (and partially secondary) education to nomadic children
aged between 5 - 15 years. Subjects taken will follow the
national curriculum and include, Chinese, English, Tibetan,
Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Culture and Gymnastics.
Because the distances that children have to travel to get
to school are great, most will live in dormitories at the
school. Many might only be able to travel home once a year.
The school has been located in Karnang,
a grasslands area (3900-4000 metres above sea level) surrounded
by mountains. Its' geographic position takes advantage of
any available sunlight thereby providing classrooms and
dormitories with as much natural heat as possible through
the day. Classrooms are located on the south and dormitories
on the north side of the school. Of course it will still
be cold on the plateau with temperatures dropping to as
low as -45 degrees Celsius and so alternative sources of
heat will be needed.
